§ Tech Intelligence / Anthropic · $900B Valuation

Anthropic Is Seeking $30 Billion More. The Price Tag Is Now $900 Billion.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that Anthropic PBC — the San Francisco AI safety company co-founded by siblings Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President) — is in early talks to raise at least $30 billion in fresh financing at a post-money valuation of more than $900 billion. The round is expected to close as soon as the end of May 2026. No term sheet has been signed and Anthropic declined to comment.

The figure, if confirmed, would represent a 137% step-up in valuation from the $380 billion post-money figure Anthropic set in February 2026 — itself a record at the time — and would place Anthropic ahead of OpenAI’s $852 billion post-money valuation from that same month. TechCrunch reported multiple preemptive offers as high as $50 billion from unnamed institutional investors, with at least one willing to commit $5 billion alone.

Behind the number: Anthropic disclosed in May 2026 that its annualized revenue run rate has surpassed $30 billion, with one source telling TechCrunch the actual figure is closer to $40 billion. That trajectory — from $1 billion in annualized revenue in late 2024 to $30–40 billion in 18 months — is the justification for a valuation that would make Anthropic, a company founded in 2021, more valuable than Disney, Goldman Sachs, or Lockheed Martin combined.

§ 01 / What Bloomberg Reported — And What Is Confirmed
Source Status · May 12–13, 2026

Confirmed: Bloomberg (May 12, 2026) and CNBC (Apr 29, 2026) report Anthropic is in early talks to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of more than $900 billion, citing “people familiar with the matter.” TechCrunch independently corroborated the $900B figure and a possible $50 billion raise size via six unnamed sources.

Not confirmed: Anthropic has not publicly announced a new round. The company declined to comment to Bloomberg and TechCrunch. No term sheet has been signed. No lead investor has been named. The round is not closed.

What is confirmed separately: Anthropic’s Series G ($30B at $380B) closed February 12, 2026. The ARR figure of $30B+ was announced by Anthropic this month. Google’s up-to-$40B investment commitment was disclosed April 24, 2026. Amazon’s $100B AWS spend commitment is separately confirmed.

IPO context (unconfirmed): The Information reported internal Anthropic discussions about an October 2026 public listing. Anthropic told Reuters it “has not decided when or even if it will go public.” TechCrunch noted that some early investors from 2024 are sitting out this round, anticipating the IPO.

The Bloomberg byline matters. The May 12 report is the closest thing to a definitive account, citing people with direct knowledge of the talks. It is consistent with an April 29 Bloomberg scoop that Anthropic was “considering funding offers” at over $900 billion, and with TechCrunch’s parallel reporting citing a 48-hour allocation window sent to prospective investors on April 30. The convergence of three separate newsrooms — Bloomberg, CNBC, and TechCrunch — on the same valuation range with different sources is the strongest available evidence. It is not a confirmation from Anthropic. It is the best evidence the press has produced before a close.

§ 03 / The Money — Who Writes the Check

No lead investor has been publicly named for the new round. What is known from confirmed prior rounds:

Known Anchor Investors from Prior Rounds (Series F + G)

Series G lead (GIC + Coatue): Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC led the $30B Series G alongside Coatue Management. GIC confirmed via its newsroom. Co-leads: D.E. Shaw Ventures, Dragoneer, Founders Fund, ICONIQ Growth, and MGX (Abu Dhabi).

Series G participants (Anthropic announcement): Accel, Addition, Alpha Wave Global, Altimeter, AMP, Appaloosa LP, Baillie Gifford, Bessemer, BlackRock, Blackstone, D1 Capital, Fidelity, General Catalyst, Greenoaks, Goldman Sachs, Insight Partners, Jane Street, JPMorgan Chase, Lightspeed, Menlo Ventures, Morgan Stanley IM, Qatar Investment Authority, Sands Capital, Sequoia Capital, Temasek, TowerBrook, TPG, Whale Rock, Microsoft, and NVIDIA.

Series F lead (September 2025): ICONIQ Growth, co-led by Fidelity Management & Research Company and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Round: $13B at $183B post-money. Source: Anthropic official announcement.

Google: Committed up to $40 billion in April 2026 — $10B immediate cash plus up to $30B contingent on performance milestones. Separately, Google Cloud is providing 5GW of compute capacity over five years. This is not a round lead; it is a strategic investment and partnership.

Amazon: Committed up to $33 billion total — $8B prior, $5B new equity at $350B pre-money (April 2026), plus up to $20B contingent. Separate 10-year agreement for Anthropic to spend $100B on AWS infrastructure, confirmed by Amazon.

For the H Round, TechCrunch reported that early investors from 2024 are sitting out, waiting for the IPO. That creates space for new institutional money. One TechCrunch source described an investor willing to commit $5 billion alone. The round, if it closes at $30 billion, would be the same dollar size as the February Series G but at a 137% higher price per share.

“Everything above is remarkable. And then there’s Anthropic. $1 billion ARR in December 2024. $4 billion by mid-2025. $9 billion by end of 2025. $14 billion in February 2026. $1 billion to $14 billion in 14 months. There is no precedent for this in the history of B2B software.”

§ 04 / The Compute Burn That Justifies It

Anthropic’s growth story is inseparable from its compute story. The two are the same bet.

The Infrastructure Stack — What Anthropic Is Spending Capital On

AWS / Project Rainier: The primary training cluster, running over one million Trainium2 chips. AWS and Anthropic completed Project Rainier and are expanding to nearly 1GW of Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity by end of 2026. Anthropic committed to spend $100 billion on AWS over 10 years.

Google Cloud:5 gigawatts of compute capacity committed over five years under the April 2026 investment deal. Google TPUs are used alongside AWS Trainium in Anthropic’s inference and training stack.

Colossus 1 / xAI overflow: Fortune (May 8, 2026) reported that demand surge from Claude Code and enterprise customers forced Anthropic to rent compute from Colossus 1 — the 220,000-GPU Memphis data center built by Elon Musk’s xAI (now SpaceXAI). An analyst estimated the arrangement generates $3–4 billion annually for SpaceXAI. Anthropic described demand as “just crazy” and “too hard to handle.”

Claude Code effect: Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic coding product, launched publicly in mid-2025 and hit $1 billion in annualized revenue within six months. Corporate customers including Uber and Netflix scaled rapidly. Claude Code drove much of the 80-fold Q1 growth that Fortune reported.

Dario Amodei’s public position on capex is notable: he has consistently argued for measured spending, warning that a company that over-commits to compute and then misses its revenue forecast by even a year faces insolvency. “There’s no force on Earth, there’s no hedge on Earth that could stop me from going bankrupt if I buy that much compute,” he told Fortune in February 2026. The $900 billion round is, in part, a hedge against having to make that call with insufficient capital.

Our run-rate revenue has surpassed $30 billion, up from $9 billion at the end of 2025, as demand for Claude continues to accelerate. This partnership gives us the compute to keep pace.

Same here. By way of background for those who care, I spent a lot of time last week with senior members of the Anthropic team to understand what they do to ensure Claude is good for humanity and was impressed. Everyone I met was highly competent and cared a great deal about doing the right thing. No one set off my evil detector. So long as they engage in critical self-examination, Claude will probably be good.

§ 05 / The Comparison — Three Labs Eat the Capital

As of May 2026, three frontier AI labs — Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI — account for the overwhelming majority of private-market AI valuation and late-stage funding. The concentration is structural: frontier model training costs hundreds of millions of dollars per run, and the compute agreements needed to sustain a training cadence run into the tens of billions. The economics favor labs that can already attract sovereign wealth funds, hyperscalers, and major institutional investors.

The Three-Lab Scorecard · May 2026

Anthropic ($900B reported, $30B ARR): If the H Round closes at the reported terms, Anthropic would be the most highly valued private company in history, surpassing OpenAI by $50 billion on valuation while generating roughly half of OpenAI’s estimated revenue. Valuation-to-revenue multiple: ~30×.

OpenAI ($852B post-money, ~$20B ARR): Closed a $122 billion round in February 2026 at $852 billion post-money — the largest private funding round in history at the time. Multiple: ~43×. OpenAI’s revenue lead has narrowed sharply as Anthropic’s ARR accelerated.

xAI ($200B, ~$4B ARR): Elon Musk’s lab raised at a $200 billion post-money valuation in February 2026. Multiple: ~50×. xAI’s Colossus cluster is the largest single GPU cluster in the world, but its revenue base remains the smallest of the three. Anthropic is renting its spare capacity.

Capital concentration: Research cited by TLDL estimates Q1 2026 VC deployment at $297 billion across all sectors, with 81% flowing into AI-related companies. OpenAI’s $122 billion alone was ~41% of Q1 AI funding.

Anthropic has always had a fraction of what our competitors have had in terms of compute and capital, and yet, pretty consistently, we've had the most powerful, most performant models for the majority of the past several years.

§ 06 / Political Surroundings — The Pentagon Standoff That Didn't Stop the Round

The reported $900 billion round is being negotiated three months after President Trump ordered every federal agency to “immediately cease” using Anthropic’s technology over a refusal to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to Claude. The dispute escalated in February 2026 and was followed in March by a federal judge temporarily blocking the ban; by April, Trump told CNBC a deal with the Department of Defense was “possible.” Investors appear to have priced through the political friction.

The Pentagon standoff post above is included as the verified political context that surrounds the company while it negotiates the $900 billion mark. We will not fabricate posts that do not exist.

Bottom Line

Bloomberg reports Anthropic is in early talks to raise $30 billion at a $900 billion valuation— a 137% premium to the February 2026 Series G and a valuation that would make a four-year-old AI safety company more valuable than most sovereign economies. Anthropic has not confirmed the round. The revenue trajectory ($1B ARR in late 2024 to $30–40B in May 2026) is the number that makes the valuation legible. Whether the multiple is justified depends on a growth rate that Dario Amodei himself has called too hard to handle — and too dangerous to bet everything on.
