Apple Promised “What Happens on Your iPhone, Stays on Your iPhone.”
iOS 27’s New Siri Runs on Google Cloud. Your Complex Queries Go to Nvidia GPUs. Tim Cook Just Flew to Beijing With Trump.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman — who called it “the biggest Siri overhaul in the assistant’s nearly 15-year history” — published leaked renders and full feature detail on May 28, 2026, 11 days before Apple’s WWDC keynote on June 8. iOS 27’s new Siri will carry conversation memory across sessions, chain multiple commands in one query, understand what’s on your screen, access your personal messages and emails for context, and operate inside third-party apps. A dedicated Siri app will compete head-to-head with ChatGPT. Users will be able to route queries to Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, or Copilot from within Siri itself.

The privacy gap is in the architecture. Apple markets its AI around “Private Cloud Compute” — a server-side system the company describes as auditable and secure. Academic researchers at arxiv.org published a May 2026 analysis finding PCC code is not fully auditable: no reproducible builds, no full source code release, and no viable third-party audit path. Complex Siri queries in iOS 27 route to Google Cloud, processed on Nvidia’s confidential-compute GPU infrastructure — outside Apple’s own servers entirely. And in China — where Apple transferred all iCloud data to a state-backed server in 2018 — Apple Intelligence will run on domestically-sourced AI models, likely Baidu or a state-adjacent provider, per current Apple negotiations.

Tim Cook flew to Beijing with the U.S. delegation for the Trump-Xi summit in May 2026 — alongside Elon Musk, Larry Fink, and Jensen Huang. Apple holds approximately 2.5 billion active devices globally. iOS 27 is the vehicle through which the world’s largest technology company will route AI queries for those users. Where those queries go, and who can see them, is a question Apple’s marketing does not fully answer.

  • June 8, 2026WWDC keynote — iOS 27 official announcementApple's Worldwide Developers Conference runs June 8–12, 2026, at Apple Park. Keynote: June 8, 10 a.m. PT. Developer betas begin immediately post-keynote. Public betas in July. iOS 27 public release: September 2026. All features from Gurman's May 28 report represent pre-announcement leaks from Bloomberg News renders — not yet official.
  • 7New Siri capabilities vs. iOS 26Chat memory (persistent context), multi-command chaining, on-screen awareness, personal context access (messages/emails/notes), App Intents (third-party app actions), third-party AI Extensions (Gemini/Claude/Perplexity/Grok/Copilot), dedicated Siri app with file attachments. The features were promised for iOS 26.4 and delayed after 'performance and reliability problems' in February 2026 testing.
  • Google CloudWhere complex iOS 27 Siri queries goApple's own LLMs proved inadequate for the new Siri. Google Gemini 2.5 Pro is the licensed backbone. Complex queries route to Google Cloud, processed on Nvidia's confidential-compute GPU infrastructure — outside Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. Gurman: 'Apple treats Siri and Apple Intelligence as architecturally separate — Siri routes to Google Cloud; other Apple Intelligence features route to Apple's PCC.'
  • 2018Chinese users' iCloud data — now on state-backed serversApple transferred all Chinese iCloud user data to Guizhou-Cloud Big Data — a state-backed server — in 2018. The Chinese government can access texts, emails, and images stored on that infrastructure, per Human Rights Watch documentation. Apple did not roll out Private Relay in China 'for regulatory reasons.' Apple Intelligence for China will likely run on Baidu or a state-adjacent AI model.
  • $851MApple fined for privacy/antitrust violations — 2025 aloneApple was fined $851 million in 2025 for privacy and antitrust violations (down from $2.1B in 2024). Active litigation: xAI (Elon Musk) sued Apple and OpenAI in August 2025 alleging ChatGPT integration deprioritizes rival AI in App Store rankings — motion to dismiss denied September 2025, case active. Ex-Human sued Apple April 2026 for allegedly removing an AI competitor from the App Store after Apple launched Image Playground.
§ 01 / What's Actually New in iOS 27
The Full iOS 27 Feature Set — Per Gurman's May 28, 2026 Bloomberg Report

New Siri App: Standalone preinstalled app with dark interface, typing-focused “Ask Siri” interface, microphone + paperclip attachments, full conversation history, auto-expiring messages. Direct competitor to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini.

“Search or Ask” swipe-down: Swipe down from any screen’s top center to open an assistant panel. Results pop out of the Dynamic Island as rich text cards. Shows app shortcuts, recent searches, weather, Siri Suggestions.

Photos — Extend, Enhance, Reframe: Three new AI editing tools. Extend generates content beyond the original frame. Enhance applies auto-corrections. Reframe shifts perspective on spatial photos. Gurman caveat: “Extend and Reframe don’t perform reliably” — possible delay to iOS 27.1.

Camera App overhaul: Fully customizable control interface. New Siri camera mode replaces Visual Intelligence button — photographs objects, routes to third-party AI or Google reverse image search. Scan food nutrition labels, business cards, etc.

Systemwide grammar checker: Competes with Grammarly. Writing Tools 2.0 can suggest full rewrites with side-by-side comparison.

Natural language Shortcuts: Describe what you want in plain English; Shortcuts builds the automation.

iOS 27 leaks just revealed Apple's REAL priorities
§ 02 / The Privacy Claim vs. the Architecture Reality

Apple’s entire AI market position rests on the privacy promise. The architecture behind iOS 27 Siri partially contradicts it. On-device (Neural Engine, A17 Pro / M4+): distilled Gemini Nano handles sensitive personal context at sub-200ms latency, never leaving the device for basic tasks. Private Cloud Compute (Apple servers): non-Siri Apple Intelligence features. Google Cloud + Nvidia GPUs: complex Siri queries that require the larger Gemini 2.5 Pro model — processed entirely outside Apple’s infrastructure.

The difference may be Apple is considering Siri and Apple Intelligence 2 different things. Apple servers for non-Siri features + Google servers for new Siri features.

Apple is testing Siri handling multiple commands at once in iOS 27 — tell it to check the weather, add a calendar appointment, and look up the news all in one query.
