Blue Origin Destroyed Its Only Launch Pad in One Explosion.
Jeff Bezos Has Been Trying to Build Rockets for 25 Years. SpaceX Has Had 400+ Successful Missions in the Same Timeframe.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. EDT on May 28, 2026, Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket — a 321-foot heavy-lift orbital vehicle powered by seven methane-fueled BE-4 engines — exploded on the pad at Launch Complex 36, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, during a routine static fire test. The entire first stage was enveloped in fire within seconds. The 86-foot upper stage tilted and fell as the first stage collapsed. The full methane and liquid oxygen propellant load ignited in a rolling fireball that residents in Cocoa Beach, 10 miles away, said felt like “a mini-nuke” — their homes shaking from the blast.

No one was injured. The rocket was uncrewed. But Launch Complex 36 — the only orbital launch pad Blue Origin owns — is destroyed. The transporter erector is gone. At least one lightning protection tower is confirmed destroyed. With it goes, for an indefinite period, Blue Origin’s ability to launch anything to orbit.

This was New Glenn’s fourth orbital launch attempt. It has now failed to complete a nominal mission in three of those four attempts. Blue Origin was cleared by the FAA to resume flying on May 22, 2026 — six days before the explosion — after implementing nine corrective actions from its previous mishap investigation. The FAA issued that clearance. Six days later, the pad is rubble.

  • $3.4BNASA HLS contract now without a launch vehicleBlue Origin holds a $3.4 billion NASA Human Landing System contract to build the Blue Moon Mark 2 crewed lunar lander. New Glenn is the planned launch vehicle. With the only New Glenn pad destroyed and the rocket lost, the entire Artemis lunar return schedule — Artemis 3 (mid-2027), Artemis 4 crewed Moon landing (2028), Moon Base 1 (fall 2026) — is at significant risk.
  • $188MNASA lunar rover contract awarded 2 days before the explosionNASA awarded Blue Origin a fresh $188 million lunar terrain vehicle contract on May 26, 2026 — two days before the explosion. Blue Origin also holds a $280.4 million option period on that contract. Jeff Bezos did not address the irony.
  • 24Amazon Kuiper launches now frozen indefinitelyBlue Origin held a 24-launch manifest for Amazon's Project Kuiper broadband satellite constellation. This was to be the first of those launches. Amazon paid Blue Origin approximately $1.8 billion last year — nearly triple the prior year. The entire manifest is now frozen with no resumption date.
  • 3 of 4New Glenn mission failures — nominal success rate: 25%NG-1 (Jan. 2025): Reached orbit but booster failed to land on recovery ship. NG-3 (April 19, 2026): Upper stage cryogenic failure, satellite stranded in wrong orbit, FAA grounded New Glenn. NG-4 prep (May 28, 2026): Full pad explosion. Only NG-2 (Nov. 2025) completed a nominal mission. Blue Origin has been building rockets for 25 years. SpaceX flew over 400 successful Falcon 9 missions in approximately the same timeframe.
  • 6 daysBetween FAA clearance and explosionThe FAA cleared Blue Origin to resume New Glenn flights on May 22, 2026, after it implemented nine corrective actions from the NG-3 mishap investigation. The static fire that exploded was the first major test after that clearance. The FAA stated this specific static fire test 'was not within the scope of FAA licensed activities' — meaning it does not regulate ground tests, only flight.
§ 01 / What Happened — The Explosion

The NG-4 mission was scheduled for June 4, 2026, carrying 48–49 Amazon “Leo” internet satellites for Project Kuiper. The satellites were not aboard during the static fire test. Static fires are routine pre-launch full-duration engine ignitions conducted while the rocket remains secured to the pad — the last major test gate before launch.

As engines appeared to begin igniting for the test, the first stage was immediately enveloped in fire. The upper stage tilted and fell. The full propellant load — liquid methane and liquid oxygen — ignited in a catastrophic conflagration that destroyed the rocket, the transporter erector, and at least one of the two lightning protection towers. Space Force confirmed Eastern Range “remains fully mission capable” for all other launch operations at Cape Canaveral. LC-36 is isolated. No timeline for reconstruction was given.

§ 02 / What Bezos Said — and What He Didn't

Very rough day, but we'll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It's worth it.

Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) · X · May 28, 2026

Bezos offered no admission of systemic quality failure, no management accountability, and no timeline. He has personally funded Blue Origin to the tune of an estimated $10+ billion over 25 years. Blue Origin was founded in 2000. SpaceX was founded in 2002. SpaceX flew its first orbital mission in 2010; New Glenn flew its first orbital mission in January 2025 — a decade later. SpaceX completed its 100th consecutive successful Falcon 9 mission in 2023; Falcon 9 has now flown over 400 missions total. New Glenn has completed exactly one fully successful mission.

The Complete New Glenn Track Record

NG-1 (January 16, 2025): First orbital launch. Reached orbit — partial success. Booster failed to land on the recovery ship. First orbital attempt.

NG-2 (November 2025): Successful orbital launch and first successful booster landing. Only fully nominal mission in New Glenn’s history.

NG-3 (April 19, 2026): Upper stage cryogenic failure froze a hydraulic line. Thrust anomaly. AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 7 satellite stranded in the wrong orbit. FAA grounded New Glenn pending investigation and nine corrective actions.

NG-4 prep (May 28, 2026): Static fire explosion destroys the rocket and destroys Blue Origin’s only orbital launch pad. Worst failure in Blue Origin history. Described by one aerospace journalist as one of the largest on-pad explosions in American launch history.

Result: 3 failures in 4 attempts. No pad. No rocket. No timeline. $3.4B NASA HLS contract at risk. Amazon’s 24-mission manifest frozen.

Blue Origin New Glenn EXPLODES during pre-launch testing — analysis
§ 03 / The Cascade — Artemis, Amazon, and the ULA Complication

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman — Trump appointee and Polaris Dawn commander — said the agency would “provide information on any impacts to the Artemis and Moon Base programs as it becomes available.” NASA’s entire lunar return schedule now carries material risk: Moon Base 1 targeted fall 2026, Artemis 3 crewed Moon orbit targeted mid-2027, Artemis 4 crewed Moon landing targeted 2028. All depend on Blue Moon landers launched via New Glenn. There is currently no New Glenn pad.

A separate cascading risk: United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket uses two BE-4 engines — the same engine family as New Glenn’s first stage. Investigators will need to rule out any BE-4 connection before ULA can safely resume Vulcan launches. If BE-4 root-cause investigation grounds Vulcan, two of the three heavy-lift vehicles critical to U.S. national security launches would simultaneously be unavailable, with only SpaceX’s Falcon 9/Heavy remaining operational.

Spaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult. We will work with our partners to support a thorough investigation of this anomaly, assess near-term mission impacts, and get back to launching rockets.

We experienced an anomaly during today's hotfire test. All personnel have been accounted for. We will provide updates as we learn more.
