Jill Biden Watched the Debate and Thought Joe Was Having a Stroke. The Next Morning, She Told a Raleigh Rally He Won.

On the morning of June 28, 2024 — fourteen hours after the CNN presidential debate watched by 51.27 million Americans — Jill Biden stood on a Raleigh, North Carolina rally stage in a sleeveless dress and led the crowd in praise of her husband's performance. “Joe, you answered every question. You knew all the facts.” That was her public statement. It was repeated in network coverage for 23 days, until Joe Biden withdrew from the race on July 21, 2024.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2026 — twenty-three months later, eight months into the second Trump term, six days before the publication of her memoir View from the East Wing— CBS News released the preview of Rita Braver's Sunday Morning interview with her. The full interview airs May 31. The verbatim quote:

I wasn't horrified, I was frightened. I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never. I don't know what happened. As I watched it, I thought, 'Oh, my God, he's having a stroke.' And it scared me to death.

Editorial cartoon: Jill Biden watching the June 2024 debate in private terror, thinking Joe was having a stroke — contrasted with her public Raleigh rally praise the next morning.

What CBS aired Tuesday cannot be reconciled with what she said in Raleigh the next morning unless one of the two statements is not true. The accountability lane is the year between them — the year the country was told to ignore what it saw on screen.

§ 00 / Update — May 28, 2026 — Two New Revelations

Two material developments landed on May 28, 2026 — the day after CBS Sunday Morning released the “stroke” preview. First: per The Atlantic's advance copy of Jill Biden's memoir View from the East Wing(publication June 2026), the memoir reproduces what Joe Biden whispered to Jill as they walked off the debate stage on the night of June 27, 2024. Second: CNN's Abby Phillip went on the record Wednesday May 28 calling out Democrats for what she termed the “deceptiveness” that surrounded the year-long cover-up of Joe Biden's cognitive condition.

What Joe Biden Said Walking Off the Debate Stage — June 27, 2024

Per Jill Biden's memoir, as Joe and Jill stepped off the CNN Atlanta debate stage:

Joe Biden, whispering to Jill:“I really f---ed up, didn't I?”

Jill Biden, in response:“Yes, you did.”

Less than 14 hours later, Jill Biden was on the Raleigh, NC rally stage telling a crowd that Joe had “answered every question” and “knew all the facts.”

The memoir also discloses several additional first-person details Jill withheld from the public through Joe Biden's entire post-debate political life:

Additional Memoir Revelations (per The Atlantic advance copy)

Codeine / Ambien suspicion. Jill writes that she suspected Joe may have unknowingly taken codeine cough syrup or Ambien in the hours before the debate, contributing to his cognitive performance on stage.

The blood test she wishes had happened. Jill writes that she wished Joe had taken a blood test immediately after the debate — to establish a contemporaneous medical record of whether any pharmaceutical compound was active in his system.

Cognitive testing — “advisors overruled me.”Jill writes that she internally advocated for formal cognitive testing of the President. White House advisors — per Tapper / Thompson's “Original Sin” cohort: Ron Klain, Mike Donilon, Steve Ricchetti, Bruce Reed — overruled her.

The post-debate event the same night.Jill writes that at a post-debate event hours after the “f---ed up” whisper, she publicly praised Joe with the line “Joe, you did such a great job!” The contradiction between the verbatim backstage whisper exchange and the public praise hours later is, on the memoir's own internal record, established.

Editorial cartoon: Biden inner-circle advisors blocking press access and denying cognitive testing — the cover-up from June 28 through July 21, 2024.
§ 00b / Update — CNN's Abby Phillip on the Cover-Up

On Wednesday May 28, 2026 — the day CBS released the “stroke” preview — CNN's prime-time host Abby Phillip went on the record on her own panel. Phillip is not a conservative. She is one of the network's most prominent Black women anchors, with a documented progressive editorial sensibility. Her on-the-record critique of the Democratic Party's handling of Joe Biden's cognitive decline is the single most consequential left-of-center editorial breakage on this story since Tapper / Thompson's “Original Sin” (May 2025).

I appreciate that we now get to see at least some version of a truth that she's putting out there because I think, yeah, the conversation should be had about the deceptiveness that was behind this.

Abby Phillip · CNN · May 28, 2026

What kind of political system covers that up? And makes it OK to lie to people about what everybody knows is true?

Abby Phillip · CNN · May 28, 2026

On the same Phillip panel, Kmele Foster— podcast host, co-founder of The Fifth Column — named the specific question CBS Sunday Morning declined to ask Jill Biden:

So why did you lie at the time?

Kmele Foster, on Abby Phillip's CNN panel, posing the question he doubted CBS would ask Jill Biden · May 28, 2026

That question — “So why did you lie at the time?” — is the question every honest 2026 retrospective on the 2024 Biden cover-up has to answer. It is the question CBS Sunday Morning, per Foster's panel posture, will not ask. It is the question Tapper / Thompson's “Original Sin” (May 2025, 200+ insider interviews) has already substantially answered with the “Politburo” / inner-circle framework. It is the question House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) has an open probe positioned to put on the record under subpoena.

The memoir whisper-quote, the codeine / Ambien suspicion, the advocated-and-overruled cognitive testing, and Phillip's on-the-record “deceptiveness” framing land on the same day. The story is no longer about whether the cover-up happened. The story is about who knew, when, and what they said publicly while they knew it.

§ 01 / The Raleigh Rally — the Morning After

At approximately 1:00pm local time on June 28, 2024, Joe Biden took the stage at the Raleigh rally that had been pre-booked as a victory lap. Jill Biden delivered the prefatory remarks. The C-SPAN archival clip is unambiguous.

Joe, you answered every question. You knew all the facts. And let me ask the crowd — what did Trump do? Lie!

Jill Biden · Raleigh, NC rally · June 28, 2024

That was not an isolated remark. Through July 4, July 8, and into the Aspen Ideas Festival rounds, Jill Biden continued to defend her husband's debate fitness publicly. The administration line — that Joe Biden had a cold, that the cold cleared, that the substance was strong — was carried by the East Wing and the West Wing in tandem.

§ 02 / What Was Actually on Screen

The single most-clipped line from the debate was Biden's closing assertion in the Medicare answer. He trailed off mid-sentence and surfaced with a sentence that the White House later had to publicly walk back.

Making sure that we're able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I've been able to deal with… the COVID — excuse me, with dealing with everything we have to do with — look, if — we finally beat Medicare.

Joe Biden · CNN Presidential Debate · June 27, 2024

Well, he's right. He did beat Medicare. He beat it to death.

Donald Trump · responding on stage · June 27, 2024
§ 03 / Tapper / Thompson — “Original Sin”

CNN's Jake Tapper and Axios's Alex Thompson published Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again on May 20, 2025 — Penguin Random House. The book is built on more than 200 interviews with Democratic insiders. It identifies a four-person staff “Politburo” — Mike Donilon, Steve Ricchetti, Bruce Reed, and Ron Klain — and a separate inner ring of family and aides that included Jill Biden, Hunter Biden, Anita Dunn, Anthony Bernal, and Annie Tomasini. The book documents Biden's schedule was hard-capped and his exposure to non-staff carefully managed for at least 18 months before the debate.

Biden's delayed decision to drop out of the race totally f----- us.

David Plouffe, veteran Democratic strategist · quoted in 'Original Sin'

Obama began to walk offstage, but Biden walked to the edge and, after waving and giving a thumbs up, stopped and stared blankly into the crowd, [until] Obama [had to] turn around, grab Biden's arm and guide him backstage.

Tapper / Thompson, 'Original Sin' · Hollywood fundraiser, June 2024

Biden's inner circle colluded to mislead the public and took extraordinary measures to sustain the appearance of presidential authority as Biden's capacity to function independently diminished.

Jill Biden just admitted what the entire country saw with their own eyes. Joe didn't know what he was doing on that debate stage. The whole inner circle covered it up for years — and Jill, who is now writing a book about it, was at the top of the cover-up. The country was lied to. The American voter was lied to. Then they tried to run him again. Disgraceful. Original Sin says it all.

Jill Biden is now out there finally admitting that she did NOT know what went wrong with Sleepy Joe during our spectacular, and highly rated, 2024 Presidential Debate, where Joe was not exactly performing to the highest level of debate standards. She said that she thought he was having a 'stroke,' and various other really bad things, and yet never rushed onto the stage to help her troubled husband, as any good wife would do. Nobody else knows the answer to that, BUT I DO!!!

§ 09 / They Said He Was Sharp — The Reversal Gallery

For the better part of two years — 2023 through July 2024 — the American media and Democratic Party establishment formed a united front: Joe Biden was sharp, cognitively fine, and absolutely up to the job. Then the debate happened. Then “Original Sin” happened. And one by one, the same people who vouched for him publicly reversed themselves in print.

What They Said Before — Documented Public Record

Joe Scarborough (MSNBC), March 6, 2024, on-air:“This version of Biden intellectually, analytically, is the best Biden ever. Not a close second. He’s far beyond cogent. In fact, I think he’s better than he’s ever been.”

Ron Klain (D), Biden’s own White House Chief of Staff, 2023-2024:“He is sharp as a tack. He’s able to govern, he’s able to lead.”

Michael Douglas (actor, Democratic donor), 2024:“Sharp as a tack.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), mid-2024, CNN:“He’s completely mentally sharp.”

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison (D), August 10, 2024:“President Biden remains mentally sharp, fully engaged, and committed.” (Statement issued after Biden had already privately decided he would withdraw. The statement was released Aug. 10; Biden announced withdrawal July 21.)

Karine Jean-Pierre (D), White House Press Secretary, 2024:“80 is the new 40.” Also: “It is not warranted. It is not necessary” — responding to a reporter asking about cognitive testing for the president.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), July 2024:“The man is sharp. The man knows what he’s talking about.”

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), June 2024— called the Wall Street Journal’s reporting on Biden’s cognitive decline “a hit piece,” claiming Democrats who met with him saw his “wisdom, experience, strength and strategic thinking.”

Kamala Harris (D-CA), when asked by Fox News’s Bret Baier whether she had any concerns about Biden’s mental acuity after three and a half years of weekly meetings: “I think the American people have a concern about Donald Trump.” She declined to answer the actual question.

What They Said After — The Reversals

Joe Scarborough (MSNBC), May 21, 2025— appearing on CNN with Jake Tapper to discuss “Original Sin”: “I said that this was Biden that is at his best — that’s what I saw. I was obviously wrong.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), May 14, 2025, Washington Post:“It is now painfully obvious he should not have run.”

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), May 14, 2025, Politico:“There’s no doubt that former President Biden suffered cognitive decline in office.” Murphy said this publicly in February 2024, eight months before the election, telling Face the Nation only that Biden was “the only person who’s beaten Donald Trump.”

Pete Buttigieg (D), Transportation Secretary, May 13, 2025, Iowa town hall:“With hindsight, most people would agree” Democrats would have been better off without Biden running. Two months earlier, in July 2024 post-debate, Buttigieg had told Spectrum News that Biden “delivered” from the West Wing every time it mattered.

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), May 14, 2025, Politico:“I was very frank with the president during his campaign about shortcomings.” In August 2024, Shapiro had publicly said “Not at all” when asked about fitness concerns.

David Axelrod (D), May 14, 2025, NPR:“It was an irresponsible decision on his part, and frankly, his family’s.”

George Clooney— co-hosted the June 15, 2024 Los Angeles fundraiser where Biden appeared severely diminished, then told the audience that night that Biden was someone “no one sharper or more dedicated to leading this country.” Then wrote a Washington Post op-ed on July 12, 2024: “The Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe Biden of 2010, or 2018, or even 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”

§ 10 / Karine Jean-Pierre's Press Briefing Parade

For three and a half years, Biden’s press secretary’s job was to stand at the briefing room podium and deny what the reporters in front of her — and the American public watching — could see with their own eyes. The quotes below are each documented; dates and sources are cited.

KJP's Greatest Hits — Documented, in Order

2022, CNN with Don Lemon— When asked about Biden’s cognitive fitness, Jean-Pierre said: “That is not a question that we should be even asking.” Called public concern about the President’s cognition “hearsay.”

August 2023, press briefing— Called reporting that Biden’s staff was limiting his public schedule due to fatigue “ridiculous assumptions.”

September 2023, press briefing— “No one treats the President of the United States, the commander in chief, like a baby. That’s ridiculous.”

February 2024, after Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report called Biden “an elderly man with a poor memory”— Jean-Pierre: “That part of the report does not live in reality. It just doesn’t.”

June 2024, MSNBC with Nicole Wallace— Dismissed viral Biden cognitive-decline videos as “cheap fakes” rooted in “misinformation,” calling them “very insulting to the viewers.” The videos in question were genuine footage, unedited.

June 2024, repeated press briefings— When asked whether Biden would submit to a cognitive test: “A cognitive test is not warranted. It is not necessary.” Also: “80 is the new 40.”

Post-withdrawal, July 2024— Standing at the same podium where she had called all the footage “cheap fakes” six weeks earlier: “There’s been no cover-up.”

Air Force One Stairs — Three Separate Incidents

March 19, 2021— Biden stumbled and fell THREE TIMES ascending the stairs of Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews. The falls were caught on camera and broadcast worldwide. The White House said he had a “good day overall.” (Associated Press, March 19, 2021)

August 2023— The White House quietly changed Biden’s boarding protocol — switching from the long forward stairway to the shorter rear stairs specifically to reduce fall risk. The change was first noted by NPR (August 31, 2023). The press was not briefed on the reason.

February 21, 2024 — Biden stumbled again on the rear stairs of Air Force One. (Washington Times, February 21, 2024)

Bike Fall, June 18, 2022 — Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Biden attempted to stop his bicycle to speak with reporters at Cape Henlopen State Park. His foot caught in the toe cage of the pedal and he fell over sideways. Biden’s own words: “I got my foot caught.” Press was standing ten feet away. Secret Service agents rushed to assist. (NPR, CBS News, Fox News, NBC News — all June 18, 2022)

Biden Calls Zelensky 'President Putin' — NATO Summit, July 11, 2024

At the NATO Summit press conference in Washington, D.C. — the single highest-visibility diplomatic event of the summer — Biden introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by saying “Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin.” He caught himself and returned to the microphone: “We’re gonna beat President Putin. President Zelensky. I was so focused on beating Putin.”

At the SAME press conference, asked about VP Harris’s ability to beat Trump, Biden said: “Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I didn’t think she was not qualified to be president.”

Two verbal errors of that magnitude, at the NATO Summit, on camera, in front of every allied leader present. This is July 11, 2024 — ten days before withdrawal. (Time, Axios, CNBC, CNN, The Hill — all July 11–12, 2024)

The Hollywood Fundraiser — June 15, 2024 — Obama Had to Intervene

At the Peacock Theater fundraiser in Los Angeles — hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, attended by Obama, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts — multiple attendees told Tapper and Thompson (“Original Sin”) what the public did not see:

Biden did not recognize George Clooney when Clooney greeted him backstage. An aide leaned in and said “George Clooney” — Biden responded “Oh, yeah!” In a small donor breakout, Biden began speaking “barely audibly” and trailed off. Obama stepped in to preside. At moments during photos, Obama “would hop in and finish sentences for him.”

The moment most widely circulated: a video clip in which Barack Obama takes Joe Biden’s hand and walks him offstage while Biden momentarily pauses. The White House described it as Obama being “chummy.” The attendees Tapper and Thompson interviewed described Biden having “stopped and stared blankly” before Obama intervened.

George Clooney — in his Washington Post op-ed (July 12, 2024), which effectively ended Biden’s candidacy — wrote: “The Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe Biden of 2010, or 2018, or even 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”

The Juneteenth Concert, June 10, 2024 — White House Lawn

During the White House Juneteenth concert on the South Lawn, video posted by RNC Research showed Biden standing completely still — not moving, not reacting — while everyone around him danced and celebrated. The clip was viewed tens of millions of times. The White House said he was “taking in” the performance.
