A Woman Was Sexually Assaulted at Knifepoint in Central Park. It Is the Park’s Fifth Rape of 2026, NYPD Data Show. No One Is in Custody, and the Precinct Has Five Detectives.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, a man with a knife sexually assaulted a 39-year-old woman near East 66th Street and Fifth Avenue on the park’s eastern edge, police said. She was taken to a hospital in stable condition. As of Sunday there was no arrest and no suspect description.

NYPD data cited by the New York Post make it the fifth rape in the Central Park Precinct this year, against three at the same point in 2025. Police have not said the cases are connected.

§ 01 / What Police Have Said

An NYPD spokesperson told West Side Rag only that a woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in the park on Saturday night. Fox 5 counted eight to ten officers at the scene and reported police asking anyone in the area around 8:30 p.m. to come forward.

Accounts differ on how she came to be in the park. CBS New York, Fox 5 and West Side Rag say a man approached with a knife and assaulted her in a wooded area. The Associated Press reports she was walking just outside the park and was dragged in at knifepoint, and that a bystander found them and called 911. The common core is the knife, the location and the hospital. The Post, citing law-enforcement sources, reports she likely did not know her attacker.

“My thoughts are with the survivor and I hope she makes a full recovery.”

§ 02 / The Numbers, Both Ways

CBS New York and the Associated Press, citing NYPD statistics through October 18, put the park at four rapes through October 18 against three a year earlier, which squares with the Post’s count of five once Saturday’s is added. Citywide, the Post reports 1,693 rapes through October 18 against 1,650 a year earlier, and says rape, subway crime and hate crimes ran against the decline in other major crime.

Two caveats belong beside those figures. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) signed the “Rape Is Rape” law in January 2024, effective that September, widening the legal definition beyond vaginal penetration, so counts before late 2024 are not comparable. Both 2025 and 2026 fall after the change, which makes the year-over-year comparison largely like for like, though NYPD officials say the new rules may also be bringing more survivors forward. And felony assault in the park is down 20%, per AP.

§ 03 / A Thin Precinct

Streetsblog NYC reported on October 20 that the Central Park Precinct has about 80 officers and five detectives, the fewest of any precinct, with an allotment about 30% below average. Its officers average 4.1 arrests a year against roughly nine elsewhere, a gap one former officer called “a plum post for a patrol cop.” Robbery and grand larceny had risen to 69 incidents through October 11 from 49 in 2025. We found no police, Parks Department or Central Park Conservancy statement on lighting, cameras or patrols after Saturday.

Earlier violent cases are on the public record. In March, a parolee, Lateef Caldwell, 30, was held by bystanders after an alleged attempted rape near the Davis Center, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D)’s office announced his indictment on April 8. In June, Nazzarius Rager, 26, was arrested on attempted-rape charges after an alleged attack near West 64th Street. Both are presumed innocent, and we cannot say whether either is among the five counted.

§ 04 / Who Answers for the Park
Responsible Officials

Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D-NYC) — Said on PIX11 on July 14 that “a lot of the increase in rape also comes from an expanded definition of what counts as rape.” Council Member Susan Zhuang (D) answered that the point “should never be used to deflect from the responsibility to reduce sexual violence.” We found no mayoral statement on Saturday’s attack.

Commissioner Jessica Tisch — Runs the NYPD for Mayor Mamdani (D), including its staffing decisions. No statement on this case found.

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg (D) — Prosecutes cases arising in the park, including the March indictment.

Council Member Virginia Maloney (D) — Called it the second reported attack on a woman on the park’s east side in a week, per CBS New York.

Bottom Line

A man is at large after a knifepoint sexual assault in Central Park, in a precinct with five detectives and a rape count above last year’s. Park assaults are down, the city says part of the rise is definitional, and police have not tied the cases together.

Precinct and citywide counts are NYPD statistics as reported by the New York Post, CBS New York and the Associated Press; the Post counts five rapes in the Central Park Precinct in 2026 and CBS and AP count four through October 18, which are consistent with each other. We could not identify the dates or details of the other earlier rapes behind that count, and the March and June cases described here were attempted-rape charges that may not be among them. The victim is not named. No suspect has been identified, and police have not linked any of the cases to one another. We read the New York Post reporting through a syndicated copy. The NYPD’s own CompStat page was not retrieved.
