He was booked into the Centro Penitenciario de Ibiza, then appeared the next day before Audiencia Nacional investigating judge Antonio Piña, who ordered him held without bail and referred the case to Spain’s national high court in Madrid. A custody-review hearing followed on July 16; as of this writing, its outcome has not been made public, and the United States has a 40-day window to file formal extradition paperwork before any surrender hearing proceeds — a decision that ultimately requires sign-off from Spain’s Council of Ministers.
The sealed indictment, according to multiple press accounts, charges international money laundering with the intent to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization — Hamas, which the State Department has designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization since 1997. Prosecutors reportedly allege that after Chambers relocated to Tunisia in late 2023, he wired roughly $7,500,000 out of the United States to Tunisian banks in order to seek opportunities to fund Hamas — a characterization Chambers’ supporters dispute, pointing to his investments in Tunisian businesses and his sponsorship of the Club Africain football club as the actual, legal destination of that money. Reported sentencing exposure runs from 20 years on the lead money-laundering count up to 30 years total. None of it is proven. On November 9, 2023, Chambers announced the “Babochki Collective” — Russian for butterflies — describing it as “a cadre collective focused on revolutionary funding, propaganda and political education, direct action/legal support.” He also founded and served as general secretary of the Berkshire Communists, a “revolutionary Marxist-Leninist collective” based in Alford, Massachusetts, and ran the Berkshire People’s Gym there until it closed for zoning violations in January 2024. Babochki’s documented membership, per NGO Monitor’s public reporting, includes activists Calla Walsh, Mirah Wood, and Jorge Rocha of the Democratic Socialists of America International Committee.

Kamau is absolutely right. I've given a lot (and our collective has) to related things, but I've hardly 'bankrolled protests,' & certainly haven't directed a thing. I am not Soros. I am an organizer like others, who fell into material circumstance, & Babochki supports comrades.
Chambers has never hidden the network’s existence or his role funding it — his own account is the primary record of who Babochki supports and why. What’s alleged, and unproven, is that a slice of that same money crossed the line from lawful activism financing into material support for a designated terrorist group.
The Chambers indictment did not emerge in a vacuum. FBI Director Kash Patel (Trump-appointed) named Christopher Raia FBI co-deputy director in January 2026, and Raia has since described a new, multi-agency Joint Mission Center — pulling in Treasury and IRS financial investigators alongside FBI counterterrorism and cyber specialists — built to trace funding behind violent protest movements.
