FDNY EMS Unit 17W3 was dispatched shortly after midnight on Thursday to a shooting at 1245 Webster Avenue. By the time Vasquez and his partner had loaded their equipment and pulled to the curb at 1368 Webster — a block north, in front of an apartment building — gunfire erupted nearby a second time. According to the NYPD and the EMTs' own account on camera to CBS New York and ABC7, the ambulance itself became the target or a stray-round recipient: a single bullet entered the rear, transited the length of the cabin, and exited the front.

Vasquez and his partner were taken to a hospital as a precaution. Neither was struck. The 18-year-old shooting victim — whose name has not been released — was transported by a second ambulance to St. Barnabas Hospital and is listed in stable condition. No arrests have been made. The 44th Precinct investigation is open. Police are looking for a suspect identified in initial witness statements; no charging document has been filed and no one has been publicly accused. All parties are presumed innocent.

According to FDNY records cited by JEMS and Firehouse.com after Thursday's incident, FDNY EMS personnel were the targets of 363 documented attacks in 2022alone — more than double the 2018 count. In 2024, more than ninety percent of FDNY workplace-violence incidents involved EMS rather than fire-suppression units. Nationally, the EMS occupational-violence injury rate is roughly twenty-two times the average U.S.-workforce rate.
