$1.9 Million for DEI Transformation Training for the Air Force
The Air Force Is Facing a Pilot Shortage. It Spent $1.9 Million on DEI Transformation Training Anyway.
The Department of the Air Force funded $1.9 million in “DEI transformation training” — contractor-led diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum delivered to Air Force units across bases. The Secretary of the Air Force established a DEI Strategic Plan in 2021 with explicit transformation goals, including mandatory training for all Air Force personnel, diversity targets for officer accessions, and cultural change initiatives embedded in leadership development programs.
The Senate Armed Services Committee had raised concerns during the same period about Air Force pilot shortfalls — the service was short hundreds of fighter pilots, and training hours were a constrained resource. Time spent on mandatory DEI transformation training is time not spent on mission-essential training in a force already stretched on readiness capacity. The GAO has documented connections between non-mission-essential mandatory training and pilot training hour deficits.
