The Democrat Running for Senate Said a Soldier Shot Four Times Didn’t Deserve to Live. Then He Called a Truck His Apology.

In June 2019, a man named Graham Cunningham Platner logged into Reddit under the username P-Hustle and left a comment about a viral helmet-cam video of Pfc. Ted Daniels— a soldier who had just been shot four times by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, shrapnel tearing through him, bones broken, still fighting his way down the mountain. Platner’s assessment: “Dumb motherf—er didn’t deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat a— wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt.” Platner is now the presumptive 2026 Democratic Senate nominee in Maine, challenging Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).

The Daniels comment was not a single lapse. The Maine Monitor and the Bangor Daily News archived roughly 2,000 Reddit comments written by Platner between 2013 and 2021 under the P-Hustle account. Among them: the Army is “full of fat, lazy trash who would rather not be in uniform,” “as a whole the organization is absolute trash,” and it “attracts a lower standard of person.” Platner deleted the account in August 2025— the same month he announced his Senate campaign. He has not disputed that the account was his.

The day after the Daniels post broke into major news coverage, VoteVets PAC — a Democratic-aligned veterans’ organization — endorsed Platner anyway. The date was May 20, 2026. As of May 25, the endorsement stands. Warren, Schumer, and Jeffries all declined to comment when pressed by Fox News. Platner confronted by a Fox reporter on approximately May 24 responded: “You should read the comments in context. It’s very clear I’m joking.” He then climbed into his truck and drove away without apologizing.

Pfc. Ted Danielsis a Purple Heart recipient. In 2012, during a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan, he was pinned down, shot four times, suffered shrapnel wounds and broken bones, and kept fighting his way down a mountain. He later spent more than fifteen years in law enforcement. He enlisted at age 35 — older than most, because he wanted to serve. The helmet-cam footage from the ambush went viral: it is raw, terrifying, and shows a man doing the hardest thing there is under the most extreme circumstances imaginable.

In June 2019, Graham Platner — then a former Marine sergeant, later Army National Guard, State Department security contractor — found that video and left a comment under his Reddit alias P-Hustle. The Maine Monitor archived it. Verbatim:

“This video never gets old. Dumb motherf---er didn't deserve to live. At least his stupidity and fat a-- wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt.”

Daniels, reached by Fox Business, responded on camera: “People like this don’t say stuff like this to my face. It’s online, and that right there tells me, Graham, you’re a coward.” He added: “Thank you for your service, Graham, but I think you’re a scumbag personally.”

The Daniels post was not the only entry in the archive. Written between March and April 2019, Platner’s Reddit account also produced the following assessments of the United States Army:

Platner served as a Marine (2003–2007, Sergeant, three combat tours in Ramadi and Fallujah), then Army National Guard (2010–2011, Afghanistan), then as a State Department security contractor in Kabul (2018). His service record is real. None of it explains the comments, and Platner has not offered a factual explanation. His defense has been: context, and joking. He told Fox News: “I did four tours in the infantry, any attempt to say that I disrespect veterans is slanderous and offensive.”

For context: Platner posted the Army insults and the Daniels mockery in 2019. He was 35 years old. He was not a kid venting after a bad day in basic training. He was a combat veteran with multiple deployments, old enough to know what the words meant, and apparently comfortable enough with them to write them under a pseudonym he used for years.

Rob O’Neill— the Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden — went on Fox News to respond. He did not choose diplomatic language:

“Mr. Platner was way out of line talking about a soldier that way. This is completely barbaric. Everything from the Nazi tattoo on his chest and wishing a soldier would die under fire, no, I don't think he's fit for the Senate.”

O’Neill’s reference to a “Nazi tattoo” points to a separate controversy: Platner’s documented Nazi-SS Totenkopf chest tattoo, identified by the Anti-Defamation League and first reported in October 2025. Retired Navy SEAL Bill Brownalso weighed in: “A Senator who calls soldiers ‘trash’ and mocks a man’s Purple Heart has shown who he really is.”

The responses from sitting members of Congress split cleanly down partisan lines — with one side speaking and the other going quiet.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME)called Platner’s posts “just appalling” and said it is “never appropriate to mock a downed American.” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), a combat veteran, said: “Mocking servicemembers for getting wounded or killed is absolutely despicable. These are our brothers and sisters.”

On the Democratic side: Fox News reporters asked Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) for comment. All three declined. There was no statement from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. There was no withdrawal of support from national party infrastructure.

VoteVets PACis a Democratic-aligned veterans’ political organization that presents itself as a voice for military families and service members. On May 20, 2026— three days after the Daniels post began circulating widely and one day after major national outlets ran the story — VoteVets publicly endorsed Graham Platner for the Maine Senate seat.

As of May 25, 2026, the endorsement has not been withdrawn. According to the Boston Globe, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), himself a Marine veteran, is affiliated with the VoteVets network that made the call. No spokesperson has been quoted explaining how the organization weighed the posts.

Platner’s public response has been consistent across the controversy: the comments are being taken out of context, he was joking, and any claim that he disrespects veterans is slanderous.

After the second quote, Platner climbed into his truck and drove away. No apology was offered to Ted Daniels. No apology was offered to the Army. No apology was offered to the families of soldiers the posts describe as “fat, lazy trash.” CNN first reported on the existence of the P-Hustle account in October 2025. Platner did not apologize then, either.

The joking defense presents a specific problem: the Daniels post is not structured as a joke. It does not have a setup and punchline. It does not have an ironic inversion. It says a wounded soldier who survived four gunshot wounds “didn’t deserve to live” and calls him a “dumb motherf—er.” A reasonable reader would require Platner to specify what, exactly, is the joke — and Platner has not done so.

The man Graham Platner mocked has a documented record in the public interest. In 2012, Pfc. Ted Daniels was caught in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan. The helmet-cam footage shows what happened: enemy fire from multiple directions, Daniels taking four rounds, shrapnel wounds, broken bones, continuing to move and fight while injured. He was awarded the Purple Heartfor wounds received in combat. After his military service, he spent more than fifteen years in law enforcement. He was 35 when he enlisted — older than most recruits — because he chose to serve.

Daniels’ response to learning about Platner’s posts was direct and on camera. He did not issue a press release. He sat in front of a microphone and said what he thought. Two quotes went widely cited:

The Fox News YouTube Shorts clip documenting Democratic leadership’s silence on the Platner comments circulated widely:

Maine is not a lock for either party. Sen. Collins has won statewide in a Democratic-leaning electorate multiple times, including in 2020 when Trump lost the state. Trump carried Maine’s 2nd Congressional Districtin 2024, picking up one electoral vote — signaling that rural Maine continues to move Republican. The Senate seat is not safe for Democrats; it requires persuading the very type of voter most likely to find the Daniels and Army posts disqualifying.

Platner will argue his service record. He will argue context. He may argue that Collins is too old, too entrenched, too aligned with Trump on certain votes. None of those arguments changes what is in the archive: his own words, written at 35, about a soldier who survived four gunshot wounds in combat. The archive is public. The Bangor Daily News has published it. The Maine Monitor has it. Platner deleted the account, but the screenshots and the reporting exist in the record.

The question for Maine voters is not whether the posts are real — Platner has not denied them. The question is whether a man who wrote “didn’t deserve to live” about a Purple Heart recipient is the right person to represent Maine in the United States Senate.
