A wedding reception at La Centre Conference & Banquet Facility in Westlake, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, ended in a brawl on the night of Friday, August 21, 2026. Police said the fight grew out of a long-running feud between two families attending the celebration — not alcohol, the explanation Westlake officers say is usually the first thing people assume.
What started inside the hall spilled into the parking lot. By the time officers arrived, roughly 45 people were still outside, some of them still throwing punches.
Westlake police were dispatched around 8:50 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reported a large fight at the banquet hall on Detroit Road. Officers found guests locked in confrontations both inside the venue and outside in the lot; a chair had already been thrown, and cellphone and police-camera video later released by the department shows several men chasing a guest across the parking lot. The response was big enough that Westlake called in mutual aid from three neighboring departments — Bay Village, Rocky River, and Fairview Park — to get the crowd under control. Paramedics treated at least two people for non-life-threatening injuries, including one guest a banquet manager found bleeding in a restroom.
Police arrested three men. Raed Mahmoud Sulaiman, 46, of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, is charged with assault, inducing panic, and tampering with evidence. Police allege he grabbed a butter knife from a table setting and brandished it at other guests, then tossed it aside as officers moved in. Westlake Police Capt. Jerry Vogel described the escalation directly: “He took it one step further and brandished an actual butter knife from a place setting evidently and was threatening people with the butter knife.”
Abdallah Wahdan, 48, of Westlake, is charged with aggravated menacing for allegedly threatening other guests. Ali Wahdan, 47, is charged with violating a temporary protection order — a court order that barred him from being near members of a specific family at the wedding. Capt. Vogel explained why that charge doesn’t require proof he sought the confrontation out: “Under the law, if you see this person, even if you’re there accidentally at the same time, you have to leave.” He didn’t leave.
All three charges were filed in Rocky River Municipal Court, which handles misdemeanor cases for Westlake. None of the three men has been convicted of anything; each is presumed innocent, and the charges above are allegations. Despite the chaos, the reception itself reportedly resumed and finished without further incident once police restored order.
