Soros, China, Iran, Islam: Six Claims About France’s Riots. Here Is What the Record Shows for Each.
Sunday, October 18, 2026. Six explanations for France’s unrest are circulating: that George Soros is paying for it, that Chinese money is, that China is pushing it on X and TikTok, that Islam or immigration is driving it, that Iran is behind it, and that the far left lit it. Named people make each one, and each rests on different evidence.
Below, each claim gets the same three questions: who is saying it, what is documented, and what nobody has shown. Some of the answers favor the claimants.
- $7.61MOpen Society to Indivisible since 2017A U.S. group, not a French one, per Fox News; the 2023 grant was “to support the grantee’s social welfare activities.”
- dozensfake news platforms allegedly linked to CGTNViginum’s Fawn Mianju case, announced June 2026, per NewsGram; not about these riots.
- 381 of 557Paris custodies were adults151 were minors, per Paris prosecutors via franceinfo; no breakdown by religion or nationality is published.
- 2 summonsIran and France, Oct. 6 and 7Each summoned the other’s ambassador, per AFP and France 24.
Soros. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has said, about the U.S. “No Kings” protests and not France, that they were “organized by Soros operatives and funded by Soros money,” per Fox News. Documented: the Open Society Action Fund gave Indivisible, a lead organizer of the “No Kings” protests, a two-year, $3 million grant in 2023, and Open Society has given it $7.61 million since 2017. Also documented: in September 2025 a Justice Department official directed U.S. attorneys to prepare investigations of Open Society, per ABC News. No charges have been reported, and Snopes, in a summary we could not retrieve directly, found no direct financial link to the protests. For France, a summary of an academic study of 1999–2018 grants puts France in a low or intermittent funding tier, and we found no grant tied to this unrest.
China. A Gateway Pundit headline claims an FBI investigation and a “cash trail” to the Chinese Communist Party; we found no FBI or DOJ statement confirming either. The documented thread runs through Neville Roy Singham, a Shanghai-based figure Fox News calls a “tech tycoon”. Fox News Digital says his network’s BreakThrough News promoted the French protests; per Wikipedia, The Daily Beast reported about $80,575 in donated rent routed from Singham through The People’s Forum in 2021, and the advocacy group NCRI, via the Jerusalem Post, reported People’s Forum grants to BreakThrough in 2021 and 2022. The House Ways and Means Committee subpoenaed BreakThrough News, Tricontinental and The People’s Forum in July, and The People’s Forum’s attorney called it a “witch hunt.” These are allegations with no charges found, and nobody has shown money from this network to any French group or to the riots.
Documented: Chinese government-linked influence operations exist. France’s Viginum agency announced the “Fawn Mianju” case in June 2026: per NewsGram, dozens of fake news platforms, allegedly linked to state broadcaster CGTN.
Not shown: any report tying either to this unrest. We found no Chinese state-media coverage of it and no report from Meta, TikTok, X, Viginum or a U.S. agency naming Chinese accounts boosting it, though the searches were broad. The precedent is 2023, when President Emmanuel Macron (Renaissance) blamed TikTok and Snapchat for a “considerable role” in copycat violence and a Senate committee recommended limits on TikTok, per Fox News, which offered no evidence that Beijing directed the app. If a company or agency document exists, it belongs here.
President Donald Trump (R) wrote that the protests were really about Islam “wanting to take over a once great Country,” per Newsweek’s October 6 analysis, and on October 18 that France is “burning” because of “immigration of people from an entirely different world,” per France 24. The Washington Times editorial board argued the riots are “about Islamism, not education.” Documented: students at a Beaugency school blockade were filmed singing a song referencing the Toulouse and Bataclan attackers, prosecutors opened a terrorism-glorification investigation, and three minors were taken into custody, per Newsweek. Fox reports Palestinian flags at marches and lists a Muslim student association among 50 groups it tracked, and Euro Weekly News reported images of a Palestinian flag raised on the Republic statue.
Not shown: any published breakdown of this month’s arrestees by religion or nationality. France does not record religion in arrest data. The foreign-national share often cited, under 10%, comes from the 2023 riots, per press reports of Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin’s (Renaissance) Senate testimony. AP reports French authorities have not linked immigrants to the rioting. The unrest did begin in Seine-Saint-Denis suburbs, where INSEE puts immigrants at about 32% of residents, per i24NEWS; that is population context, not arrest data. What is published for 2026 is custody by age in Paris: 381 of 557 people were adults and 151 were minors, with 25 of undetermined age, per franceinfo. Newsweek quotes two experts who disagree: CNRS anthropologist Florence Bergeaud-Blackler describes an “Islamo-leftist alliance,” while UMass sociologist Fareen Parvez calls religion a “red herring” given the school-conditions demands.
The same framing is spreading on X. On October 9, the account @realMaalouf posted that the unrest had “spread to Belgium” and that Brussels “looks like a war zone.” The post also states that 88% of people under 18 in Brussels have a foreign background and that more than half are Muslim. It cites no source for either figure, and we have not found a primary source for them. Belgian authorities’ account of any unrest is not part of the post. The posts below, including replies and several standalone posts, some about Spain or unspecified places rather than France or Belgium, show what was posted. They are not findings, and the accounts’ descriptions of attached videos are not independently verified.

The Islamic riots in France have spread to Belgium, and Brussels looks like a war zone right now. This is the capital of the European Union. 88% of people under 18 have a foreign background, and more than half are Muslim. What has Europe done to itself? [video attached]

I keep going back to this interview as we watch France burn... The Far Left interviewer frame Elon and us as "Far Right" for being against exactly what is happening today. Elon's every word was proven correct. Her view was proven wrong. The Media is the Enemy of the People. [video attached, an interview; the post's opinion and characterization, not a finding]

Iran. Documented as a state-level dispute: Tehran summoned France’s ambassador on October 6 over police handling of the protests, per AFP, and France summoned Iran’s ambassador on October 7, saying official Iranian Foreign Ministry accounts had posted misleading content in a “disinformation campaign,” per France 24. Posts showing Iranian flags at the riots circulate online, but we found no wire or major-outlet report confirming them, and many widely shared Iranian-flag images are Lion-and-Sun flags from opposition rallies against Iran’s government.
The far left. Matignon, the prime minister’s office under Sébastien Lecornu, is recorded in the Wikipedia timeline as calling the movement a “manoeuvre organised by La France Insoumise and its ultra-left proxies,” which LFI denies. Il Sole 24 Ore reported serious clashes with “black bloc” activists in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, and the Paris police prefect referred Saint-Denis mayor Bally Bagayoko (LFI) to prosecutors over remarks that violence can be “legitimate,” per the timeline. No court has ruled on the government’s accusation.
Documented: Open Society grants to a U.S. group and a DOJ directive on it; House subpoenas to the Singham-linked groups (no charges); Chinese influence operations in general; the Beaugency video and terrorism probe; Palestinian flags reported at marches; the reciprocal ambassador summonses over Iranian official-account posts; reported black-bloc clashes.
Alleged or reported, not proven: LFI orchestration; Singham money to BreakThrough in 2021–22 (Daily Beast, NCRI); Singham-network influence on the French protests; a Chinese “cash trail.”
Not shown by any source we found: Soros funding of the French riots, Chinese or Iranian payment of rioters, Chinese state accounts boosting this unrest on X or TikTok, and a breakdown of the rioters by religion or nationality.
Open Society grants to a U.S. group, Chinese-linked influence operations and a French-Iranian dispute over official accounts are reported, with the allegations labeled above. A source tying any of them to the French riots themselves has not appeared, and when one does, it goes on this page.
