Nurse Solomon Went Home to Help People. A Felon in Oakland Shot Him for His Chain.
Shortly before 3 a.m. on May 31, 2026, Lartey Solomon, 33, was walking to his car near 14th and Harrison streets in downtown Oakland after leaving a nightclub with a friend. A man approached him, complimented his chain necklace — and then demanded it. Solomon, according to his mother, told the man he could have it and began to remove the jewelry. The man opened fire anyway.
Lartey Solomon died at a nearby hospital. He was a first-generation immigrant from Ghana, a registered nurse at Kindred Hospital in San Leandro, a father to an 11-year-old daughter, and — to more than 20,000 followers on YouTube and TikTok — he was “Nurse Solomon,” a free health educator who recorded videos on fatty liver disease, blood pressure management, and nursing school strategy from a phone, for no fee, because he believed information should be free.
On June 4, police arrested Shacory Carnell Daniels, 39, of Vallejo — a convicted felon with prior felony convictions in multiple California counties, including pimping and false imprisonment. On June 8, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson (D) charged Daniels with murder, with a special allegation of felony murder because the killing occurred during an attempted robbery. He is held without bail. His plea hearing is set for June 30, 2026.

Oakland police responded to a shooting call at approximately 2:46 a.m. on May 31, 2026, at the 1400 block of Harrison Street in downtown Oakland. They found a 33-year-old man with at least one gunshot wound in a parking lot. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.
The victim’s family told KTVU what happened in those final minutes. Solomon and a friend had been out in downtown Oakland. They were walking toward their parked car when a man approached. He complimented Solomon’s chain. Then he demanded it. “My son says, ‘You can have…’ He was ready to take off everything,” Florence Edwards, Solomon’s mother, told KTVU. The suspect fired regardless.
Solomon’s brother Emmanuel captured the incomprehensibility of it: “He was scared of guns. For him to die of gun violence, that’s sad.”
Lartey Solomon was born in Ghana and immigrated to the United States with a plan: become a nurse, then a doctor, and use every lesson he learned to help others. He earned an associate’s degree from Merritt College in Oakland in 2020 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Samuel Merritt University in 2023 — becoming, in the same city that would take his life, one of thousands of working nurses who keep Bay Area hospitals staffed.
He worked at Alameda Healthcare and Wellness Center and at Kindred Hospital in San Leandro. But to more than 20,000 followers across YouTube and TikTok, his daytime job was beside the point. Under the handle “Nurse Solomon,” he recorded practical, jargon-free videos: what fatty liver disease looks like, how to read your own blood pressure numbers, what nursing school actually demands. His sister-in-law told KTVU the content was never a business. “What Lartey was doing online wasn’t for financial reasons,” she said. “It was his passion.”
His last TikTok post, published the day before he was killed, discussed the symptoms of fatty liver disease. He had recently returned from his first visit to Ghana in more than a decade. He leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter and a father who still lives in Ghana.
“My son says, 'You can have...' He was ready to take off everything.”

Investigators tracked the suspect’s vehicle and discovered shell casings that investigators linked to Shacory Carnell Daniels, 39, a Vallejo resident. Daniels was arrested June 4, 2026, in Menlo Park. He is not a stranger to the criminal justice system: records cited in reporting show prior felony convictions in multiple California counties, including pimping and false imprisonment. In 2018, he was involved in an incident in which he and an accomplice rammed Fremont police cruisers during an auto burglary arrest. At the time of Solomon’s killing, Daniels was a convicted felon — which is why his charges include a separate count for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
The charges filed by DA Ursula Jones Dickson on June 8 are: murder under California Penal Code § 187; a special allegation of felony murder because the homicide occurred during an attempted robbery; a special allegation of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm; and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. Booking records from Santa Rita Jail also show additional charges of dissuading a witness, pimping, shooting at an unoccupied vehicle, and evading police. Daniels was arraigned June 8 and is held without bail. He is presumed innocent until convicted.
'Nurse Solomon' — a 33-year-old registered nurse and Bay Area health influencer — was shot and killed during a robbery attempt in downtown Oakland early May 31. His family says the suspect asked for his chain, and he was willing to hand it over. The gunman fired anyway. A suspect has since been charged with felony murder.
DA Ursula Jones Dickson announces murder charge against Shacory Carnell Daniels, 39, in the May 31 fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man during an attempted robbery near 14th and Harrison streets in Oakland. Daniels faces felony murder special allegation and a felon-in-possession count. Held without bail; plea hearing June 30.
Oakland is administered by Mayor Barbara Lee (D), who won a special election in April 2025 after voters recalled the previous mayor, Sheng Thao (D), in November 2024. Thao was recalled in part over crime and governance concerns; she was later indicted on federal bribery charges (her trial is set for 2026, and she is presumed innocent). The county’s criminal prosecutions are handled by District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson (D), who took office after voters also recalled the prior DA, Pamela Price (D), in 2024 on a platform that she had been too lenient with violent offenders. Jones Dickson’s office filed the murder charge in this case within days of Daniels’ arrest.
Oakland’s violent-crime numbers have improved from recent peaks. The city recorded 67 homicides in 2025 — a 22% decline from 2024’s 86, and the lowest tally in years. Robberies, which reached above 3,000 in some recent years, fell below 1,600 in 2025. City leaders have attributed part of the improvement to increased enforcement and to the change in DA; critics note that the baseline itself reflects a decade of elevated violence. A robbery that ends in a murder over a necklace in the early hours of a Sunday morning is what that baseline looks like at 2:45 a.m.
Mayor: Barbara Lee (D) — won April 2025 special election following the recall of Sheng Thao (D), who faces federal bribery charges.
District Attorney: Ursula Jones Dickson (D) — took office after the November 2024 recall of Pamela Price (D), who voters removed for soft-on-crime policies.
County: Alameda County — Democratic supermajority on the Board of Supervisors.
Action in this case: Jones Dickson’s office filed murder charges within four days of Daniels’ arrest; he is held without bail. Case pending plea hearing June 30, 2026.
The system failure here is not mysterious. Shacory Daniels was 39 years old, a convicted felon who prosecutors say could not legally possess a firearm. He possessed one anyway. California has extensive felon-in-possession law; Daniels is charged under it. The question it raises is not new: how does a man with prior felony convictions in multiple counties, including a 2018 incident in which he rammed police cars, end up free and armed in downtown Oakland at 3 a.m.?
The court record for Daniels will be public as his case moves through Alameda County Superior Court. We will follow it. What is already on the record is this: Lartey Solomon was compliant. By his own mother’s account, he told the man he could have the chain and began removing it. A compliant victim is supposed to survive a robbery. He did not.
Lartey Solomon was 33. He had two nursing jobs. He had more than 20,000 people who followed him for free health advice he never charged them for. He had an 11-year-old daughter in Ghana and a father who learned of his death from across the Atlantic. He had just come back from his first visit home in over a decade. He had plans to become a doctor.
What the nursing community called him was clear: “Nurse Solomon” was not a brand. He was a person who kept showing up — at the bedside, on camera, in people’s lives — because he believed that was what you were supposed to do. A chain necklace cost him everything.
We will update this page when the Daniels case reaches verdict or if additional charges are filed. Lartey Solomon is presumed to rest in peace.
