CNN Booked a Biden COVID Official to Rebut RFK Jr. On the Same Broadcast, He Conceded the Lab Leak.
On Sunday morning, CNN’s State of the Union handed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. roughly 22 minutes of live air, and he spent most of it arguing that the American press — CNN specifically — failed the country during the pandemic. Anchor Dana Bash pushed back hard, and repeatedly.
Then CNN brought on its rebuttal witness. Dr. Ashish K. Jha, President Joe Biden’s (D) White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator, was booked to correct the record on Kennedy — and he did, bluntly, on camera.
He also told Bash he had come to believe the virus more likely came from a lab. Same anchor. Same hour of television.

The segment ran long and it ran hot. Bash pressed Kennedy on Anthony Fauci and on vaccine safety. Kennedy kept turning the question back on the network asking it, accusing CNN of running death-toll chyrons and of treating dissenting scientists as a menace rather than as a story worth chasing.
“You were part of the problem. There was absolute press malpractice. Your job — your job — is a fierce skepticism toward authority, and you weren't doing that. You were beating up on people who were dissenting.”

Bash did not concede the point. She defended the coverage on the record and drew a hard line on the vaccine claims Kennedy was making: “It is also factually true that the COVID vaccine worked. The COVID vaccine prevented deaths. There is data, upon data, upon data.” At another point she told him plainly, “I also don’t want to use this interview to allow you to say things that aren’t entirely true.”
CNN backed her the same day, publishing its own fact-check of the interview under the headline “RFK Jr. targets Fauci and pushes medical misinformation in fiery CNN interview.” A network spokesperson said: “Dana Bash is a veteran journalist who conducted a newsmaking interview… Asking tough, substantive questions to those in power is the job of every journalist.” That defense is fair on its own terms. The problem is what happened next, on the same broadcast.

Kennedy also made claims in this interview — about vaccines and autism, about RSV, and about American COVID mortality — that CNN, Dr. Jha and other outlets dispute on the record. This page does not adopt or defend any of them. Its subject is press conduct and the origin question, both of which sit in federal documents. Kennedy also said on camera: “I will say it right now, that people — parents should get their children vaccinated for measles,” and “Measles vaccine is effective. It stops measles in about 97% of the cases.”
Minutes after Kennedy was done, Bash brought on Dr. Ashish K. Jha, who served from April 5, 2022 to June 30, 2023 as White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator under President Joe Biden (D) — the job the press shorthanded as “COVID czar.” He was booked to rebut Kennedy, and he opened by doing exactly that: “There was a lot of information that Secretary Kennedy said that just isn’t true. It’s just factually not true.”
Then Bash asked him where the virus came from. Jha did not hedge. “When I went into the White House, my view was this was almost surely a natural outbreak, maybe a lab leak,” he said. “Based on information I learned and based on information I’ve seen, I have come to conclude that it is more likely to have been a lab leak.”

That is not a confession and should not be read as one. Jha revised a scientific judgment because the evidence moved, which is the honest thing to do — and precisely why it is worth noting how much of the coverage never did. He was not in the White House in 2020; by his own account he was then advising governors and mayors. He also drew a line on who owns the pandemic’s failures.

Jha’s reversal lands harder than an ordinary change of mind because the other side of that argument was not simply losing on the merits in 2021 — it was being removed. On August 26, 2024, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) that senior Biden administration officials had “repeatedly pressured” Meta for months to take down COVID content “including humor and satire,” and “expressed a lot of frustration” when the company refused. Zuckerberg wrote that “the government pressure was wrong” and that he regrets “that we were not more outspoken about it.”
Alphabet said much the same thing a year later. In a September 23, 2025 letter to Jordan, the company’s counsel wrote that senior Biden administration officials “conducted repeated and sustained outreach” pressing YouTube to remove pandemic videos that did not violate YouTube’s own policies. YouTube then retired those rules and opened a reinstatement path for accounts it had banned under its COVID and 2020-election misinformation policies.
Among the accounts YouTube banned under those rules was Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s. The man CNN booked on Sunday to answer for the pandemic record is a sitting Cabinet secretary who was deplatformed under a policy the platform has since abandoned — after the federal government leaned on that platform to enforce it.
The official record moved in public, in stages. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s updated assessment in August 2021 found the intelligence community split, with no consensus. The Department of Energy concluded in February 2023 that a lab origin was most likely, at low confidence. FBI Director Christopher Wray said on February 28, 2023 that the bureau assessed a “potential lab incident in Wuhan,” at moderate confidence. The CIA, on January 25, 2025, judged a “research-related origin… more likely than a natural origin,” also at low confidence. And on December 4, 2024, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic — chaired by Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) — adopted a 520-page final report by unanimous bipartisan vote concluding a lab origin was most likely.
In June 2026, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s declassification package added whistleblower allegations that analysts who supported the lab-leak hypothesis were marginalized, discouraged from dissenting, or faced professional retaliation; Gabbard said several complaints were referred to the Intelligence Community Inspector General. That package is contested — Lawfare published a skeptical analysis arguing the documents do not prove what she says they prove, and it is cited here for that reason. The reversals are not confined to Republicans. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said publicly that the lab leak “wasn’t a fringe idea after all,” and that he had been “blinded” by partisanship.
I called Biden to tell him Fauci was no good, either didn't have a clue, or was dishonest. The call was well received, but sadly, not acted on. Biden went on to give Fauci vast destructive power.

The argument now has a policy attached to it. On July 28, 2026, HHS issued the United States Government Policy for Stopping High-Risk Life Sciences Research, prohibiting federally supported dangerous gain-of-function research and replacing the prior oversight regime with enforceable limits.

Two days later, on July 30, the White House published findings stating that a lab-related gain-of-function incident is “the most likely origin of COVID-19” — the same explanation President Donald Trump (R) pointed to early in 2020, when saying so publicly was treated as disqualifying.

None of that resolves the vaccine arguments Kennedy made on Sunday, and this page does not try to. What Sunday settled is narrower and harder to wave off: the origin question much of the press spent years treating as fringe was conceded on CNN’s own air, by the Biden administration official CNN booked to rebut the man raising it. No charge, no defendant — just a broadcast that answered its own question and kept going.
