Four days later, on the July 28 episode of the Pivot podcast, NYU Stern marketing professor Scott Galloway responded — not with a media critique, but with an on-air tirade so profane his own co-host, Kara Swisher, visibly recoiled. Collins accepted the WHCA’s award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure that night, recognized for her reporting on the tense Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. When Trump took the podium, he told the room her win was “fake,” said she “never smiles,” and asked her directly: “Kaitlan, do you have a smile? Smile!”
He then turned the joke toward Dylan Mulvaney, the transgender influencer whose 2023 Bud Light partnership became a flashpoint in the culture war:

The WHCD has long doubled as a mutual roast between the press and whoever holds the presidency, and Trump’s hour-plus remarks fit that format — he worked through a long list of targets before finishing by pulling on a red “Trump 2028” cap, a nod to a third term the Constitution does not permit, and telling the room: “When I’m not around, you’re going to be broke. There’s not going to be anyone to report on.”

Swisher’s own reaction, captured in the same segment, was closer to discomfort than agreement: “Ewww… creepy,” she said, before pulling the conversation back toward the colleague being talked about — not defending Trump, but drawing a line her co-host had already crossed: “Don’t come for Kaitlan Collins, my friend. I thought she acted rather well.” Galloway then pulled up a photo of Collins on his phone to rebut the “never smiles” line himself, calling her “a very talented journalist” and “a lovely person.”
Galloway was not the only Democrat-aligned voice to weigh in. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) posted on X the day after the dinner:
What a sad and angry man. Kaitlan is an incredibly talented journalist and is beyond deserving of this award. President Trump just can't stand when anyone tells the truth about his failed presidency.
Collins herself said less. On Instagram the next day, she posted an Eleanor Roosevelt quote — “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” — without naming Trump. Mulvaney answered directly, in a video calling the comparison “actually the greatest compliment of all” and saying she was “incredibly honored” to be mentioned alongside Collins. CNN, for its part, told TMZ that Collins is “an exceptional, trusted journalist” who “reports every day from the White House and the field with real strength and tenacity.”
Trump did not let the joke rest. On July 26, he posted an AI-altered image on Truth Social depicting Collins in Mulvaney’s 2023 Bud Light ad, clutching a can — reported by TMZ and Yahoo News, neither of which could locate a stable, directly linkable copy of the post itself.
Variety’s headline on the speech quotes Trump describing the correspondents in the room as “the largest group of Trump Derangement Syndrome people ever put together at one time.” Whatever else is true about the WHCD, the target of this beat used the term himself, about the room he was standing in.
Wire and legacy coverage landed somewhere between those two poles. CNN Business wrote that Trump “bombed” and, in doing so, “proved its point” about the dinner’s free-press premise. The Washington Post described “mostly stunned silence.” None of that coverage used the profanity Galloway did.
There is a real, defensible media critique buried inside Galloway’s rant: making a joke about a journalist’s smile, in the same breath as a joke about a transgender activist, at an event meant to honor the working press, is fair territory for pushback. Plenty of outlets made that critique in normal, sourced, on-the-record language — CNN defended its own reporter, Healey called the remark unbecoming of the office, and Collins responded with nothing more combative than a 1940s first lady’s quote about consent.
Galloway buried that critique under something else. “Take your limp d--- and take it somewhere else” is not media criticism; it is the kind of line that gives every listener a reason to stop listening before the argument even starts. Notably, the person who caught that first was not a Trump supporter — it was his own co-host, mid-segment, on his own show, telling him “don’t come for Kaitlan Collins.” When Swisher is the one pumping the brakes, the rant has stopped being about the target and started being about the speaker.
A president made a tasteless joke at a press dinner and the room mostly went quiet. Four days later, a marketing professor with a podcast turned that joke into a profane tirade his own co-host visibly winced at. Both things happened. Only one of them handed the other side a talking point — and it wasn’t Trump. Unhinged is unhinged regardless of who triggers it, and every time the reaction outruns the provocation, it’s the reaction that becomes the story.
